What a Initiator does

They clear the way in. Reveals, flashes and displacement let a team enter a site without walking blind into held angles.

How Sova's abilities are bought

Two of Sova's abilities are bought with credits each round and lost on death. Recon Bolt is the signature ability, so it's free every round, and Hunter's Fury is the ultimate — it can't be bought at all, it charges through play.

Sova also has a passive, Uncanny Marksman, which is always active and costs nothing.

Sova FAQ

What role is Sova in VALORANT?

Sova is a Initiator. They clear the way in. Reveals, flashes and displacement let a team enter a site without walking blind into held angles.

What is Sova's ultimate?

Sova's ultimate is Hunter's Fury, bound to X. EQUIP a bow with three long-range, wall-piercing energy blasts. FIRE to release an energy blast in a line in front of Sova, dealing damage and Revealing the location of enemies caught in the line. This ability can be RE-USED up to two more times while the ability timer is active.

What is Sova's signature ability?

Recon Bolt. EQUIP a bow with recon bolt. FIRE to send the recon bolt forward, activating upon collision and Revealing the location of nearby enemies caught in the line of sight of the bolt. Enemies can destroy this bolt. HOLD FIRE to extend the range of the projectile. ALT FIRE to add up to two bounces to this arrow.

How many abilities does Sova have?

Sova has 5 abilities in total: Owl Drone, Shock Bolt, Recon Bolt, Hunter's Fury, Uncanny Marksman.

Was Sova in VALORANT at launch?

Yes. Sova is one of the 5 agents that shipped with the game, alongside the rest of the original roster.

Is Sova free to play?

Sova has to be unlocked, like every agent beyond the starting few. You do that with Kingdom Credits earned by playing, or with VALORANT Points if you would rather not wait. Unlocking is permanent and no agent is ever sold as a stronger option — the roster is balanced, not tiered by price.

Which agents are Initiators?

There are 7 in the Initiator role: Sova, Gekko, Fade, Breach, Tejo, KAY/O, Skye. Roles are the game's own grouping, not a community one, and they describe the job an agent does for the team rather than how strong they are.

Sova in professional play

How often professional teams actually pick Sova, measured across 1,820 tournament games played between 2026-05-22 and 2026-08-20. This is professional VALORANT, not ranked — the two behave differently, and a pick rate at this level says more about map strategy than about what wins games in a solo queue.

Pick rate is the share of the ten player slots in a game that this agent filled. Win rate hovers near 50% for almost every agent because professional matches are between evenly matched teams — a figure far from 50% usually means a small sample rather than a strong agent. Maps with too few games to be meaningful are left out entirely rather than shown with a warning.

What Sova's abilities cost

Two of every agent's abilities are bought with credits at the start of a round and lost when you die. The signature is free on a cooldown, and the ultimate cannot be bought at all — it charges from kills, deaths, spike plants and orbs.

Where Sova sits in the roster

Sova is one of the 5 agents that shipped with VALORANT at launch, which is why the kit is comparatively simple — the later additions are the ones with the more conditional abilities.

During development Sova went by the internal codename Hunter, which is the name that still appears in the game files.

There are 29 playable agents in total, 7 of them in the Initiator role.

More agents in the Initiator role

The other 6 agents who fill the Initiator role. If you like how Sova plays, these are the closest thing to a lateral move — same job on the team, different tools.

How Sova’s abilities interact

Interactions involving Sova, from either side — what their abilities do to other agents’ utility, and what other agents can do to theirs.

Sage Barrier Orb blocks Sova Recon Bolt

The wall is solid geometry, so a recon dart cannot scan through it — but it can bounce off it, which is how most players get revealed by a wall they thought was protecting them.

Viper Toxic Screen blocks Sova Recon Bolt

Viper's smoke blocks the dart's line of sight for the same reason it blocks yours. It is one of the few smokes that reliably denies recon rather than merely obscuring it.

Sova Recon Bolt cannot affect Yoru Dimensional Drift

Recon does not reveal a Yoru inside his ultimate. It is the closest thing in the game to genuine invisibility to utility, which is exactly what makes it strong and hard to counter.

Sova Shock Bolt passes through Brimstone Sky Smoke

Ordinary smokes do not stop projectiles. A shock dart flies through and damages whatever is inside, which is why post-plant lineups work into smoke.

Sova Shock Bolt destroys Killjoy Nanoswarm

Shock darts damage utility in their blast, and a swarm grenade's low health does not survive one that lands close. The standard remote answer to a post-plant swarm you have spotted.
