How to change your VALORANT name
Your VALORANT name is your Riot ID, and it changes on Riot's account site — not in the game. Two minutes, free, rank untouched.
The steps
- Sign in at account.riotgames.com with the account you play VALORANT on.
- Open Riot ID in the left menu — it shows your current name and tagline.
- Edit either or both: the Riot ID is the name everyone sees; the tagline is the #TAG after it, up to five characters.
- Save. The new name applies across every Riot game on the account — VALORANT picks it up next time you launch, no restart of anything else required.
If the save is rejected: names must be 3–16 characters, taglines up to 5, and both pass Riot's profanity and impersonation filters. A cooldown applies between changes — the page shows yours.
What actually changes
Nothing except the label. Rank, RR, match history, owned skins, agent unlocks and your friends list all live on the account, not the name. The one practical side effect: sites that look players up by Riot ID — including VALDB's own leaderboard search — will find you under the new name once Riot's systems propagate it.
Common questions
Is changing your VALORANT name free?
Yes. Editing your Riot ID costs nothing — there is no paid name change in VALORANT. Riot applies a cooldown between changes rather than a fee; the account page shows when your next change is available.
Does changing my Riot ID affect my rank or progress?
No. The Riot ID is display identity only — rank, match history, agents, skins and friends list are attached to the account itself and carry over untouched. Friends see the new name automatically.
Can two players have the same name?
Yes — that is what the tagline is for. Names are not unique; the combination of Riot ID and tagline (Name#TAG) is. If the name you want is 'taken', it isn't — just pick any tagline to go with it.
Why can't I change my name right now?
Riot limits how often a Riot ID can be edited, and the account page displays your cooldown. If the button is greyed out, the date shown is when it unlocks — there is no way to pay or ask support to skip it.
